INTERNATIONAL GIFT & COLLECTIBLE EXPO TO GO ON ONE-YEAR HIATUS Krause Publications has decided to place the International Gift & Collectible Expo on one-year hiatus for 2004 because of weakness in the demand for contemporary collectible merchandise and the corresponding impact upon the manufacturers of gift and collectible items. "Ongoing softness at the wholesale and consumer levels, the collapse of the secondary market for many of these products, plus the radical changes now going on in the traditional marketing channels make it difficult for manufacturers," said Claude Chmiel, show producer for Krause Publications. "And the overall U.S. economy has not yet started adding back jobs lost over the past three years by the employment demographic served by our event." As a result of these factors, several key exhibitors have decided to either opt out of the 2004 show or delay their decision to participate because of those financial and market conditions. Krause Publications felt that the smaller show would be of less value to those exhibitors, retailers, and consumers that continue to support it. However, Chmiel held out the possibility the 29-year-old event may yet be held in 2004 should enough manufacturers determine in the next 45days that they indeed plan to participate in a 2004 venue either in Rosemont or another location. "This market for collectibles and affordable art for the home has been around for 5000 years," Chmiel noted. "We are confident the gift and contemporary collectibles market will eventually bounce back, if perhaps somewhat smaller than the heyday of the '90s. By putting the event on one-year hiatus, we'll be in a position to re-examine the economics of promoting a show once this market has stabilized."
